Inspired from other manufacturing technologies (e.g. extrusion), modifications for existing machine layouts have been designed and a concept has been developed allowing the operation of an SLM machine in quasi-continuous operation without length limits driven by the process chamber dimensions. Investigated for fusion components manufacturing, this technology and know-how could now find promising applications in the sectors of aerospace, energy and transports for 3D printing of\u00a0 long complex lightweight structures.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button alignright is-style-outline\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-background has-white-background-color\" href=\"http:\/\/techtransfer.euro-fusion.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Selective-Laser-Melting-applied-in-continuous-production-mode.pdf\" style=\"color:#4d6885\">DOWNLOAD THE TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#4d6885\">Description of the Technology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:13px\" class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In\nadditive manufacturing using powder bed processes, the dimensional limits of\ncomponents are driven by the dimensions of the process chamber. This limit can\nbe circumvented if the process chamber dimensions are expanded in building\nlength direction. Scientists at KIT has reached this by using an\ninterchangeable build platform inserted into a gate on the bottom side of the\nprocess chamber. The gate is equipped with a powder retaining system allowing\nthe build platform to exit the process chamber continuously during the building\nprocess. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:13px\">The\nprocess confinement is maintained by a shell which is built together with the\nproduct using AM where the shell is extending the building platform\ncoincidently shrouding the product inside. The building platform, shell and the\nproduct inside exit the process chamber through the gate where the powder\nretaining system is in contact with the external surface of the shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#4d6885\">Innovation and advantages of the offer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:13px\" class=\"has-text-align-justify\"> The innovation is the decoupling of the product length in building direction from the process chamber using analogies from different manufacturing technologies. Besides the size aspect, the technology provides additional features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\" class=\"has-text-align-justify\">One\nAM-facility can be sued for a wide range of dimensions of products, the concept\nallows to react flexibly to customers wishes in terms of extra-ordinary length<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\" class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The\nratio in between powder bed volume and product (length and diameter) can be\noptimized if the gate and powder retaining system is designed flexibly to allow\ninstallation of building platforms which different diameters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#4d6885\">Non fusion applications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#4d6885;font-size:13px\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-text-align-justify has-white-color\">This technology and know-how could find promising applications in the sectors of civil engineering aviation, aerospace, energy for 3D printing of\u00a0 long and complex lightweight structures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#4d6885\">EUROfusion Heritage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:13px\" class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The development of new manufacturing methods for the production of key components for nuclear fusion reactors by selective laser melting (SLM). SLM offers great potential compared with conventional manufacturing methods. In conjunction with feasibility studies, complex 3D structures such as a thin- and double-walled flow channel inserts (FCIs) for dual-coolant lead lithium blankets have been successfully manufactured and tested on a preliminary level.
